Need help on selecting tarp style

I am an experienced back-country camper but very new to hammocks. I am planning a solo canoe trip in September and plan to only use a hammock and tarp for sleeping. I am borrowing my son-in-laws ENO Double Next with rain fly but believe the fly is too small for my purposes. My September trips can get very wet and windy. I intend to purchase a tarp and need some suggestions.

I would like a tarp that can do double duty as protection over the hammock when sleeping but also be used as a shelter during the day with some coverage over an open fire. I am considering the size as well as the style of tarp to get. Ideally, I would like something big enough to pitch over both the hammock and the edge of the fire. Has anyone used a set-up like this? Does a rectangular tarp make the most sense or would a tarp with door flaps also work?

    Appreciate any ideas and experiences.

    Welcome!

If weight is not an iisue you can go bigger and it should fit your needs.

best bang for your buck IMHO would be a HH hex, or http://www.bushcraftoutfitters.com/C...x10-coyote.htm

For your Sept canoe trip I recommend looking at the Kelty Noah's Tarp - 12' x 12'
They are extreme versatile if you are handy with ropes and
the coated polyester taffeta would standup to a small fires embers better than sylnylon.

dd hammocks sell a 4.5 m x 3 m tarp ,it is massive ,I use it for floating on the river and car camping ,but it is way to big for hiking with, but for a ton of space under it, it is hard to beat ,ships from Scotland ,and I got it in 3 days shipping included ,but you might get a bill from the government for a few dollars in tax ,( in Canada )

Plus 1 on this. Weight is a secondary consideration unless you have long portages, and if you plan on using ear an open flame, resistance to burns should take its place.

You will not want to hang the tarp like a diamond (on a diafonal) to get the overhang you want so make sure your shorter dimension is longer than the hammock by your safety margin (1 - 2 ft).

Thanks for all the great input. I think a square 12x12 tarp is the way to go for what I do. I can use the smaller ENO rain fly if I do any lighter backpacking trips.
