Dumb question....What exactly is the point of a footbox?

Is it just cuz your feet get colder? Or does it help if you use only a 3/4 UQ? Or both.

Just curious as Ive noticed that I like my TQ open as opposed to cinching a footbox....

It keeps the quilt over your feet, which I think is more important in a hammock than in other situations, since you're feet may be slightly elevated. It also stops drafts.

It also helps some people get a more comfortable lay. It's easier to keep the diagonal when your feet are in a special box.

I like the footbox in both my TQ and in my WBBB. The WBBB footbox helps provide a more flat lay. It is awesome.

I allowed my oldest daughter to borrow my WBBB & SF setup for Webelos Adventure Camp and she loved it and even slept on her stomach in my hammock. She says she'll never use a tent again! She better order her own, as she's not getting mine!

Are you asking about the footbox in a topquilt or a hammock?

Yes 2 very different things. The Foot Box of a quilt is made to help keep it in place, insulate around your feet...makes no difference the length of the UQ you use. The "Foot Box" on a Warbonnet Black Bird Hammock is an entirely different thing, it's simply a gather in the edge of the fabric of the hammock that is held in place by a panel of fabric/or mesh on the newest version. That foot box helps to hold a set shape to the lower end of the hammocks fabric to maintain a low tension area for your feet to rest in.

I don't know how you would keep an open TQ on top of your feet? You'd have to never move an inch the whole night.

WBBB footbox is useless to me. I sleep a little higher up to reduce calf ridge pressure, so at 5'9" my feet don't really get in there at all and the loose fabric above hangs over. A little annoying but no big deal once in the TQ.
