can someone give me a brakedown on threads?

Ok so I this topic I am speaking to gutermanns, because I dont know enough to say another brand is good.
Whats the difference between mara and tera?
If I say mara 100 what does the 100 mean, because the next term is tex 50, 40, 70, 30. If the tex means thinkness whats the 100?
    So mara, tera or other?
    100 , 70 means?
And am I right the tex is thickness?

On a side note I assume if I buy a larger roll then the one diy sells I need to somehow modify the spool. I think I have seen people with a side holder. Is that a diy creation or is there name for that?

I thought of that, but I try not to bug those guys unless I need to. I will ask here first. I know how hard those guys and gals work, diy, dutch and all the others. I also know they wouldn't hesitate to answer. I hope they can spend their time make monoey instead of answering all my silly questions.

I am thinking of getting larger runs of thread.

    Mara 100 is Tex 30
    Mara 70 is tex 40
    Tera 60 is tex 50
    Tera 40 is tex 70

The larger the tex number is the larger diameter the thread is. The gutermann number relates to how many meters of thread per measure of weight

In vary basic terms, the higher the Tex number, the larger diameter the thread is.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Units_o...le_measurement

Mara and Tera are industrial quality threads. Tera uses continuous filament construction to be even stronger than Mara for a given size. Sew-All is a high quality consumer grade thread and is often found locally and while it is sufficient for many of our projects, it is not as strong as Mara.

As far as the names like Mara 70 and Tera 40, just consider them as only a name. It could have been Mara 10256489 and Tera B. Up to a point, Gutermann sometimes relates the name to the number of meters of thread on a spool...Mara 70 has 700m on a small spool and 7000m on a large spool.

I wouldn't bother with the larger spools.

So do you switch from one to the other? Do you change thinkness for particular jobs ( within the hammock gear making world)?

So sew all, mara, tera... less strong to more.

Whats the negitive in larger spools? I have seen spools of 5500 for $10, not sure now which exact one it was. That beats 700 yards for 3.65 I have been getting.

I use Mara 70 for most things. The Sew-All is probably a better fit for very light fabrics like the lighter weights of Argon.

While Mara 70 will work well for tree straps, you can get by with fewer stitches with Tera 40. Keep in mind that some people have more problems with Tera 40 in a home machine, but most will do all right.

If you had Sew All, Mara and Tera in the same weight, then yes Tera is stronger than Mara which is stronger than Sew All. Sew All is still a strong quality thread. Mettler Metrosene Plus in another frequently locally available quality thread comparable to Sew All but is a bit stronger.

My preference for the smaller spools is simply because I have had less problems with things like the thread 'falling down' the spool with the smaller spools. I also use at least 4 colors of Mara/Tera and don't want to have large amounts of thread that might take me years to use.

I have used mara 70 exclusively, for straps, hammocks ( 1.1 from magna and argon 1.6) and noseeum netting. All black. I am not typically a person that attempts to match, especially being color blind. I figured a big spool of something I could use for all the stuff I make would be cheaper and less buying.

I have not made anyhting with sil, would I need lighter thread for that?

What situations do you switch thread?

this is also a reason to post the question instead of emailing directly.
