if only one UQ what temp rating

I'm going to be getting my son and I HG UQ in the by the first part of Oct. befor we have a big 3 day scout camp out. im looking for thoughts on the best temp rating to get. we live in central Ohio and we plan on camping year round when we can. We have lots of ground camping gear and am sure some can be intergrated in to hammocks to keep our butts warm. that is also the reason we got Monsoon and Typhoon flys with our HH. My DJXL came with pad and my son has his close cell foam pad that he has used for ground camping to add to his. and am thinking with that added into the mix and using our low temp mummy bags as top along with other layers will get us down to some low temps. I watch weather very close and alway plan for the worst and hope hope the best.
I'm thinking a 20 deg UQ and if warmer weather just hang it a little lower to get more air and up close as it gets cooler. plus with warmer UQ can help regulate temp also by top side if im thinking right.
what does others do for this .......

I agree with your analysis of a 20-degree UQ.

One concern about hanging an UQ low is this -- mosquitoes bite through a hammock.

20* for sure....best all around choice. But you know if you plan on pushing the lower temps that a 0* is going to be added ...seems the way the addiction unfolds.

I know using my 20* in 50-60* weather i can go really light to no TQ. Question I wonder myself is how low can I go with the 20*UQ and a 15*TQ sleeping bag.
I am hoping that is where I draw the line but .............

20° is a good choice. You will be able to use the quilt on its own most of the year and supplement it with a pad when it gets really cold. Of course I'm betting that you will get yourselves a 0° underquilt just for winter camping once you are used to underquilt luxury

Bottom insulation is one thing where I have exceeded the limit, but don't recommend it. A cold back is miserable in the middle of the night. No easy way to fix it like on top where you can simply pile up clothes, jacket, or simply cross your arms and tough it out.

Like others, I'd recommend the 20°. I have an 20° HG Incubator +1oz overstuff and it seems like the perfect piece of gear. I've used it between 3° and 45° very comfortably.

When I use my 40° it's not really to save weight or bulk. I don't notice much different here. It was my first UQ and plan on keeping it for temps above 40°.

I am thinking that unless it is like over 70 at night, no real reason to lower the UQ. Here in Texas, I use the UQ and just regulate the TQ and such within the hammock.

I am in the 20 degree crowd for an all around UQ. U can always supplement with pad if going into single digits. Have had my 20 into single digits many times and been fine.

If you only have one go with lowest rating you will need. My wife, both sons, and I use 20 degree UQ's.
