What is the best rope to use for a ridgeline that you can easily buy from your average retail store? I have an REI, Wal-mart, Military surplus store and Home depot close.

Dacron planer board line, high test dyneema braid fishing line (spiderwire, powerpro)
I would reach out to a arborist or marine store and see if they have lash-it or zing-it. If you lived in Charlotte I would sell you some of my dynaglide stash. Good luck.
You might try a local lawn/power equipment shop, one that caters to the pros. The one closest to me has a selection of arborist equipment and line. I've found fling/zing/lash-It and other assorted line there before
Thanks for the info guys. You all kick ***.
Just be careful for the fishing line, even high strenth line may be too "fine" for our fabrics and may, "may", cut into the fabric.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
Aside from price and availability, is there a reason not to go with standard 7/64 or 1/8 amsteel for the ridgeline? I'm new here so either a point in the right direction or a blunt explanation works well. 550 seems to have quite a bit of stretch for any practical application.
Amsteel is overkill for this application. It would certainly work.
Zing-it or Lash-it are what you want for SRLs. Proper load bearing range, and it's the smallest, lightest and most commonly used.
No reason to rummage through the hardware store or the fishing section of WW.
Dutch will get some to you yesterday.
