Today is a special day. Gumbo and I received our new Ambush under quilts from Underground Quilts and Outdoor Gear. Since this is my first UQ, I’m not really qualified to offer a comparison of the Ambush to other UQs. However, I will address those areas where I’m comfortable sharing my observations.
First, I’ve been sewing most of my life and I’m here to tell you this quilt is well made. Very well made! It is solidly constructed all around. That’s quite an accomplishment because there are many darts and tapers and other tailoring elements that are far beyond the reach of all but the most skilled hand. All are done smoothly with consistent tapering and spacing. All the stitching is flawless - which is exactly what we expect from Paul and Missy. On the matter of craftsmanship, the Ambush is top notch.
Not only is it well made, it’s well tailored. It fits. Period. Not it-fits-sort-of, or it-fits-if-you-hold-this-up-and-pull-that-in. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t have a lot of experience with under quilts but I know anyplace that the quilt doesn’t fit the hammock is probably going to be a cold spot. A miss. The Ambush doesn’t have any misses. At this writing, it’s the middle of August so it’s impossible to feel a cold spot, but I could see a gap if there was one. There aren’t any.
If I were asked to offer a critical observation, it would be in the form of an idea. Two actually. If the shock cord adjustments at the feet (which allow the quilt to be hung looser for use during warmer weather) were also at the head, the quilt would be more adjustable. More is good, right? The second idea is for an UQ protector. It could be made from the same material as a tarp with a loop in each corner to attach to the UQ’s carabiners. If it were tailored to fit the quilt the way the quilt fits the hammock, it would expand the quilt’s functionality. And you can be sure that Gumbo and I would buy the first two of those too.
Finally, you can’t talk about UGQ without mentioning the direct interaction Paul and Missy put into the experience. Paul spent three calls and a lot of time with Gumbo and me making sure we understood what we needed to understand to get the right quilts for us. Thank you Paul. Good luck with UGQ’s new Ambush quilt. I’m sure a lot of people are going to want one!
UGQ's pictures are better than mine ( a lot better ) so I'll refer you here to see the first pictures of the Ambush:
