    Modified PLUQ

    Okay, here it goes.

I am thinking of modifying the PLUQ as follows and would like some initial thoughts before diving into this project.

I will use the UQ pattern for IX, ie the pleated three layers to achieve the loft. Top layer will be poncho liner, second layer will be poncho liner, third layer with be insulbright, and finally a ripstop layer for durability.

    Thought's?

    Thanks

That's the cool thing about PLUQ's.. Experimenting is what they're about.

I have made a couple of the doubled over versions, but I find them too narrow at 31-32".. Today I made a new one with two woobies.. I cut one 46" wide and a second one 48" wide, and I cut a layer of microfiber sheet material and placed that between the two.. I pinned and sewed the layers together and then gave the outside a strip of 1" grosgrain ribbon to run the 1/8" and 3/16" shock cord for suspension and to seal the ends against air leakage.

The result is better coverage under the hammock when in the hammock, laying at an angle.

I can't wait to use it..

The only thing I would consider changing with your plan is I'm wondering why use 2 layers of poncho liner? If just for insulation, remember that poncho liner is heavy and bulky, or there's possibly better choices or options..

I have two PLUQs where the poncho is folded with the two sides came into the middle. I then placed a layer of insulbrite in between. This combination has been able to get me down to the mid 30s. True it doesn't compress like down or climashield, but for the money I am happy with it and it works well for car camping.

These will be used mostly for car camping or scout base camping so the weight is not an issue. Appreciate the thoughts. I have the shell and insulbrite in process and will post pictures as the process moves along.

Glad to hear coverage down to the 30's.

I've made a couple using IX sewn to a Poncho Liner using the pattern for the KAQ. Works well on a Hennessy

That was my intention, to use IX but the liners I bought at $10 a piece and the insulbrite through Joann's for 60% off along with the rips top at 60% off too. Couldn't pass up the deal.

My local surplus store. They were on the repaired shelf, so they are not pretty but I don't care.
