My initial thought was Batona Camp made for better straight-thru hikes, but then I saw Lower Forge was empty, and most important, Lower Forge River is right there for taking a refreshing swim after a long hike! These old bones like such amenities.

You're missing the training? Bummer. I've been saying I'm gonna hike the Batona Trail in October, so that only leaves me about eight weeks (don't wanna miss the Stokes State Forest Hang!) to get into shape and get it done!

I was thinking of leaving Atsion around 11:00 am? Sunset at 7:37 pm so I'd like to be in camp at least an hour before. I doubt we will need six hours to hike 12 miles, but the abandoned railroad tracks might be slow going if there's weeds and undergrowth. I've only hiked it in winter so the vegetation was pretty sparse with the exception of some pine trees growing.

I want to do Stokes and MAHHA in October. What weekend are you shooting for to do Batona thru?

The week before Stokes - about the only place it fits in my schedule. Halloween weekend is the backup plan but I really don't like that idea.

Always a pleasure to have Kaia and Kayak Karl on the trail with us! Probably looking at the weekend of Oct 17th right now.

What do you recommend, KK? A SOBO, or a NOBO? I'm personally inclined to do a SOBO since the toughest mileage would be the first day.

My schedule just freed up ... Sort of. Save me some trees, I'll be there before dark.
