Arrow I DIYed a triangular platform "hammock" thingy. Check out the pictures!

Traditional hammocks just don't work well when sleeping high in the canopy so I am sure most of you have seen some of my weird hammock variations. Well, this is my latest iteration:

*The cord that you see in this picture is actually 11mm climbing rope. It is too fat to damage tree bark.

I was inspired by the giant Tensile Tents that pop up on this forum every so often. I thought, "wouldn't it be great to sprawl out when I am up late in the canopy reading or making dinner?" So I began drawing up a simple design that, when pulled taught using 3:1 pulleys, became a platform (imagine, a soft portaledge!). After a bunch of research and help from online friends I found that there are 4 different manufactures of this type of hammock but I have never seen ANY of them on HammockForums.

I finally became overwhelmed with the ideas in my head so I decided to build one myself! The cost was $35 and 4 hours of my life. I am now debating if I want to finish it with a sewn-on-tent-like-tarp and mosquito netting or if I want to build a fully removable system. My only regret is that it isn't wide enough for two which was my original plan. My wife wants to join me for an overnighter in the canopy but that won't happen with this hammock.

Once I decide on how I will build the netting and rain cover it will likely become my favorite tree climbing/camping hammock.

I was too lazy to copy and paste all of the urls again so if you want to see more pictures click the link: http://treefool.com/2014/08/27/the-t...ammock-thingy/.

    1. Why would this work better high in the canopy than a normal hammock? Do you need it to be stable enough to stand up/kneel up on?
    2. I wouldn't be so sure that 11mm rope won't damage the bark, especially if the suspension is pulled as tight as it is in the picture. (The flatter the suspension angle, the higher the force.)

Interesting design, did it feel more comfortable than a double nest when your partner was laying next to you?

Awesome! How is the lay? It looks like it may be sagging in the middle, but that could just be from having both of you in there. Is it pretty flat with just you in it?

    Always innovative.

I'm curious if you have ever tried a shallow bridge hammock like this and used three or four points of attachment instead of the standard suspension triangles.
