    DIY Tarp fabric question...?

Ok, So I made my own hammock of 1.9 Ripstop nylon bought from Ripstop by the roll...made a Fronkeystien Harbor Freight 4mil tarp for my Havasupai trip...but now want to make a better lighter tarp to last for future hanging outings...can 1.1 ripstop nylon be used vs silnylon...? What is the benifits of either...?Just wondering before I order my fabric...thanks for your input...

1.1 ripstop may have a DWR but that's only water repellent, while silnylon is waterproof. Silnylon's finished weight is usually 1.4oz/sqyd

UNLESS, YOU want to go through the process of making the fabric into silnylon, there are some threads about that subject. There is also a "Sticky" in regard to DIY silicone treatment. Might be fun, the fumes would kill me other wise I would try it.

The same as normal rs with a dwr. Get the silnylon, it's cheaper and lighter.

Ok thanks. What's the best thread needle combo? And what would I do for grossgrain? Do I need it? Where would I put it? How much gross grain would I need? Is it worth it to do my own or easier to buy?
