    Pole mod: pole length?

Apologies if there are threads about this already - my search fu was weak.

I bought tadpole poles for my superfly, clearly too short. So I got another pole and will make them longer. What's a good length for a pole? I'm thinking that if the poles are bent when in place, they won't have a wear point on the tarp ridge, but at the same time they seem to put a lot of stress on the pull-outs. Plus I'm trying to give some margin for the corner tie-downs which will pull the tarp downward.

My thought now is to have the poles making the tarp almost flat when not tied down,(i.e. just hangnig from the ridge line and with the poles in place), but not really stressing the pull-outs at all, but what's a good compromise there according to more experienced people?

Sorry I misread your post and thought you were asking about a Tarp/Tent set up, using hiking poles. But apparently I was wrong on that, very wrong. I really don't have any experience with the pole mod.

I'm away from home for the holiday so can't check for sure but I think mine are also 54".
I use a loop of shock cord to attach to the pullouts instead of webbing like most do so that allows a little 'give' in the system if needed.

Thanks gentlemen. The two concerns I have are i) stress on the pull-outs, and ii) wear on top of the tarp where the pole would be lying. Both of which seem mutually exclusive, and one needs to find a sweet spot in between. Perhaps this is exaggerated. I'll measure up 54" when I get home to see how that length works for my superfly.

I made them for my son. He uses a continuous ridgeline on the outside of the tarp and the poles rest on it. Also, it doesn't seem to stress the pull-outs any more than using them as they were intended.

Thank you! A search on tendertoe led me to this thread by cpverne, which gives the same answer as those above. Off measuring and tying!

54-56 work well, i also didn't like the poles rubbing on the top of my tarp so i made a long piece of thin shock cord and run it about an inch or so above the taro for them to rest on,, works for me !. i'm no longer using the crl but switched back to a 2 line with stingerz set up
