    Winter Quilts Project

Got a 2.5 Climashield kit in Ski Patrol Red from Thru Hiker and am so impressed with how light it is I decided to expand the project to include a top quilt.

    Ordered some .5 ounce material.

With a lightweight polyester buffalo plaid on sale at Walmart for the top quilt this should make a nice set.

I'll have .75 ounces on the bottom in a full length and .5 on the top (60x80"). Will be able to lay the TQ out flat or cinch the bottom. Hoping for cold, wet weather this year.

Was mistaken about the width of the buffalo plaid for my TQ. It's not 60" so decided to make it a more conventional dimension. It will be 48x78" laid flat.

Got the .5 Climashield today and cut it out along with the cover material.

OMG, this material! -- the fleecy polyester cover and Climashield -- both stick to everything!

    Thanks, gnomad.

I'm saving about $300 but it is a pain in the neck! About to lose my sanctification so will quit for the day.

Of course, doing it on the floor is difficult. If I had a proper shop with a lay out table ..... ;-)

Argh! Didn't have enough quilt edge binding for the TQ and my local Wally was out. Will have to pick some up in Midland tomorrow when I'm over there.

    On to the UQ.

    What a nice surprise!

Ordered 4 yards of .5 Climashield for the two quilts and got over 5. Mike was probably at the end of a roll. I appreciate his generosity and fast shipment. Transactions with Thru Hiker have been great.

All pieces cut and blanket binding rounded up.

In the UQ I'll use a 45x62" piece of .25 insulation on top of full length .5 at 48x78 inches. That gives .75 in the big middle of the UQ.

Will sew smaller piece to top shell and the heavier insulation will be sewn to bottom shell. Then top and bottom are sewn together with a slight differential so the layers will not flatten each other as they curve around the bottom of the hammock.

TQ will be 48x78 inches with simple ties to make a foot box.

It leaves a 45x62 piece of .25 to make a light weight UQ with some MARPAT material for my MARPAT hammock and MARPAT poncho liner TQ.

There are left-over pieces of .5 Climashield -- enough for another 45*62" UQ in MARPAT on hand.

Well, the dog ran through the room and ripped a piece of my UQ material three ways to Sunday. I did not commit murder but thought about it!

This is going to be a nice quilt set but as with all lightweight materials it is very challenging.

It seems to me that a 5x8' layout table would be really nice for this kind of project. Working on the floor is a pain in the neck.
