    Options for whoopie slings?

So I am hoping to make a pair of whoopie slings this evening for my son's new hammock. Problem is I don't have time to order anything so hoping to be able to just go to Lowe's (or whatever hardwarde store) and get the right cordage. What I was hoping is you all could suggest the best options for what to get/look for? Looking for cheap and strong basically...I mean if i can save weight of course I want to but if we are talking grams I'm not AS worried.

Not sure you will find anything strong enough and spliceable at a hardware store....the best choice is amsteel blue available at marine stores like redden marine. I live near the great lakes and my only local source is still 45 min away on the lakeshore as the in town stores don't carry it.

Most of us use Amsteel. May find it at a nautical type store.
Needs to be some sort of braided type rope for splicing.
    Carry forth.

Need's to be hollow core, braided, and strong - at least 1000lb min breaking strength, more the heavier your son is. A whoopie will degrade the cord to about 80%. You probably want to have a factor of safety of at least 5. Take your son's weight and multiply by 6.25 - that's the cord minimum strength you should target.

You probably wont find a dyneema based cord in a hardware store, but it's possible you'll find something that could work, all be it larger and heavier.

    Fixed it for you.

With amsteel blue a whoopie sling derates the strength to ~80% of the rated MBS (minimum breaking strength). I have not seen testing with other rope materials but suspect a similar strength loss.

    kc_joe,

If you can't find what you need in stock at a boating supply shop, you might try an Arborist supply store. While I typically have to order Amsteel, Lash-it, Zing-it and Dynaglide are usually stocked.

I certainly wouldn't drive around looking for the appropriate cordage for whoopies slings. Call first. Even calling, you're probably going to waste a lot of time and still not find what you need. Amsteel and Dynaglide aren't all that common.

When West Marine has an online sale, I frequently order Amsteel and have it shipped to my local store. Nobody at that store has any idea what Amsteel is, or what it's used for, and they don't carry it in the store.

My local West Marine has Amsteel, but in larger sizes, not 7/64ths. I suspect whether there's a local sail boat marina might have something to do with it, too.

Thanks for all the help guys. Got swamped at work today and didn't get to go out so now I've got a project for in the morning. Going to try some boating stores...can't hurt to ask.
