It's definitely time for some common sense hammock control. LOL but as usual, it's not the actual thing that it the problem, but the idiots improperly using that thing. Bark damage really depends on the kind of tree, I have mostly fir,Oak and madrone with a few Redwood on my property, even the small 7/64 amsteel rope does nothing to the fir and the Oaks, however they will tear up the Madrones and even two inch straps will still decimate Redwood bark.

You can see here,20180526_093108.jpg were my laundry line has been wrapped around the same fir for 4 years now, it's starting to grow around it and the firs doing just fine. This picture20180526_093134.jpg is a small tan Oak that I probably have hung on for hundreds of night using nothing more than 7/64 amsteel with no signs of damage except no moss on the area where the rope goes around. I wonder what they would have to say about my kids treehouse? lol.

By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...

In contrast to her statements on TV, I can't seem to find anything prohibiting hammocks in their rules. Normally they have some long-winded statement about flora/fauna, tying ropes to trees, etc. but I'm not seeing it.

Looks to be a pretty soft bark.
Could be that the bark will fluff back out in time. Be cool if you could go back and see.

I know it is not always feasible but try to look for hard bark trees.
Putting some sticks under the straps around tree helps a pretty good bit. Run the short sticks vertically under the straps.

I would recommend chocking the straps with sticks/twigs which are a) softer than straps and b) will help distribute the force over more area. The first time I did this was in Yosemite where it's required to either chock or pad your straps and ridge lines and I was surprised at how quick and easy it was, and seems effective. I've noticed that UHMWPE straps, even 1", really seem to bite into bark more than I'd like, so I'm going to start chocking full-time with those straps.

Thanks for the update on the UHMWPE straps. I suppose since those straps have tensile strength greater than steel, they could bite more than Poly straps. I too will chock my straps in the future.

I’m usually putting stuff under my suspension lines as well. Different reason. So much sap on the trees I’m using it helps prevent the stuff from getting on the straps. So if it helps the bark too that’s great.

Who has visited Brazil knows that. NOBODY uses webbing straps to hang a hammock, only ropes. Hammocks are very common in the north part of Brazil. The rest of the country they are hang in the hooks on the wall as a ornament.
A minority of hikers uses hammocks, but only in warm weather because underquilts are a unknown thing down here, above and beyond just 2 or 3 brands have cheap hammocks available.

What I mean is and considering people who manages national parks , if hammocking becomes popular it will be banned even if you use a 2 or3" webbing straps.
Just my opinion. I will let you know. I hope I'm wrong.
