    Goofed on uq ripstop order?

I'm planning on making my first down uq, and ordered some ripstop from ripstop by the roll. I was so seduced by the colors available (blaze orange and robin's egg blue, oh my!) that it didn't occur to me that maybe 1.9 oz ripstop is not the best fabric for down quilts. Now I'm worried that I'll spend quite a bit of time making an uq that will leak down like crazy. (Typical noob mistake?)

So...should I risk it, or should I just make a synthetic uq instead with lovely fabric I ordered? I won't be doing any ul backpacking any time in the near future, so weight is not a huge consideration, but if I go the synthetic route, I don't want to end up with something as bulky & heavy (5+ pounds! ) as the modified Walmart sleeping bag that I'm currently using as bottom insulation. And I want something that will keep me warm down the the mid-20s or so.

ETA: what if I could change the order to 1.1 ripstop nylon (in the same pretty colors, natch) - would that be sufficient to keep the down in?

Any input or help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd shoot Kyle a PM or an email and talk to him about changing your order to calendared 1.1 or some other downproof material if you are going to make a down quilt.

Regular 1.1 or 1.9 won't cut it. Your fabric must be calendared and downproof

If you can not change your order and have to reorder, use the 1.9 to make stuff sacks.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Ripstopbytheroll has a "downproof" category. Any fabric that is not listed there will not be downproof. Save yourself a lot of money (since your down won't stay in the quilt for long) and time, and either change your order - or, if you can't and you've got enough fabric, make a nice hammock.

Thanks, everyone. I'll see if I can change my order, and if not, I'll have a lot of pretty stuff sacks. You can never have too many stuff sacks, right?

Sadly, you can have too many stuff sacks if every time you make a new piece of gear you turn the fabric scraps into a stuff sack. Don't ask me how I know.

Moreover, 1.9 oz. ripstop is pretty heavy for a stuff sack that's going to be put in your pack and carried. It's great for hammocks (don't listen to the ultralight crowd - except with regard to stuff sacks). What it's really great for is large bags for storing down quilts and such in an uncompressed state. Of course $2/yard fabric is just as good for that purpose, but if you have 1.9 nylon you need to find a use for, that's a good one.

A few weeks ago I ordered from rip stop by the roll and had to modify my order, Kyle took care of it with no problem. Shoot him an email and he'll take care of it.
