Modifying a Walmart quilt for an underquilt??

I am considering modifying a Walmart synthetic sleeping to make an underquilt. I've got Apex 5.0 Climashield for a winter quilt but wanted to do a quilt for fall first and I'm trying to figure out if it's easier and more economical to modify as opposed to ordering Apex 2.5 oz to a UQ from scratch. My questions:

How far off are the temperature ratings? I'm skeptical that a $20 bag is really good to 5* but does anyone know the CLO rating or a more realistic guess of the temperature range for their products? Should I just add ten to fifteen degrees and assume I'm OK or would it differ for every bag they sell? Sometimes they list the type of insulation and sometimes they don't. . .

Would it be easier to modify a rectangular bag or a mummy bag? Or does a mummy bag best modify into a fitted UQ while a rectangular bag modifies easiest into a rectangular QU?

    Thanks!

Usually the temp rating on those bags are the "lower limit" numbers. Not the comfort limit. As a general rule I add +10º to any bag to get my comfort rating.

I'm curious as well. The only knowledge of wally world products I can share is this- avoid the microfleece blanket. I used one for camping and woke up the next morning covered in fuzz as though I murdered the fuzz monster. I probably should have known with it being a king size blanket for $20.
