    Stone Mountain State Park NC

So I was planning to hike the Uwharrie trail on the 14th, but due to a knee injury, I am planning something shorter.

I want to find a place that you can take a short hike to a campsite, but have other trails available to dayhike. I watched NCPatricks video and decided Stone Mountain would be a perfect place.

But... it's about 150 miles away, and the Park ranger just told me you can't reserve the "hike in" campsites, its on a first come, first served basis.

Before I drive all that way and get denied, does anyone have any advice on how to secure a site there? Does it fill up every weekend? Do I need to get there early? Any tips are appreciated.

Get there early, especially on a weekend. I've seen it full on the weekends but pretty empty during the week. But most people arrive mid to late day after day hiking. I can't guarantee but if you get there early you SHOULD be ok. If not are you willing to car camp? There is an awesome campground there with sites for hanging. I've done both the trails and campground and love this park. Tons of deer in the park. I've seen people "stealthing it" along Widow's creek trail(the backpacking trail) when the sites are full too. I'd go even if you have to car camp. If you hike in, hang your food. Bears are in the area. Checkout my profile pic, thats Stone Mountain itself.

Thanks for the info. I am going regardless now! I am glad to hear the campsite is nice, that secures it for me. At least I wont be left without somewhere to camp. I cant hike but my friends want to dayhike. Car camping would work.

The ranger told me on the phone that they haven't been full for the last couple of weekends, so chances are good.

Carolinahammockhanger, do you live near there?

IMO they are there. I read a trip report lately that saw one at the right past the intersection of Widow's Creek and MTS trails. I've seen some tracks. And a friend of a friend who use to live on property that bordered the park said he would see em every now and then. I just wish I could say I've seen one there, from a safe distance. Also there are bobcats there too. There is even pics of em on the State's website. The deer here are crazy. They are everywhere and tons of em. They aren't scared the least little bit.

One last thing. My son got a check list off the web of the animals he'd might see in the park. Black bear was on there.

Bobcats can be scarier than just about anything else. Partly because you can't know they are there until you find signs they were. I read reports of people finding tracks in the snow where a big cat has followed them down a trail. I think I'd rather know a bear is around.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Geez, there were bears sighted recently within the Greensboro city limits... surely there are bears at Stone Mountain!
