as I am looking at quilts and will have to purchase 4 of them to start my family off
$50 per quilt extra adds up

affordable is synthetic or the DD or the KAQ sold here for sure

otherwise I am not going to hold my breathe for equivalent stuff being cheaper ever from mainstream as it has never happened in the bag world for cheap

case in point a huge company like sierra design
    http://www.sierradesigns.com/product...t-800-2-season

now it has a super cool feature I hope cottage folks pick up on and make better with the peak hole thing
but look at the price the fill etc.. and tell me would you pick that over one of the great vendors here ?

I know the sierra design will go on sale and then get a extra %20 off thing and drop to maybe $175 or less sometime somewhere and maybe next year $150 close out I would grab one but at the current price of $259 for a EN Comfort Limit: 38oF / 3oC bag !!! with 800 DD not worth it IMHO I can come here and get a better TQ

so I pick a cottage persons quilt from here I can get a 850 GD not DD fill (better) same size for $259 and IMHO the cottage will be superior in every way
now same temp but I step down to 700 for the same cottage vendor for $229

again like that sierra designs quilt when it hits the $150 mark it will be a nice buy but till then its not a good deal

I fear the introduction of really cheap hammock gear with turn folks away from our hobby.
The gear will not function as advertized folks with be cold clammy and damp.
Only to say this hanging stuff is for the birds.

I have two JRB Hudson River quilts. At $240 each I consider them a steal. I have two quality 3 season quilts that will last for a couple decades easily, for the cost of a week in a semi-decent hotel room. They have been warm when the lake froze, double as a cover for the bed, and not a month goes by that I'm not using them for a camping trip or a backpack. Had I gone with something cheaper, say a synthetic, I would have worn them out by now since I got them 7 years ago and the average life of an often-used synthetic bag/quilt is maybe 4 years.

With backpacking gear, the true cost of something is not in dollars, but in use - if it meets your needs and will last you a long while if cared for properly, it's really cheap entertainment. You'll spend far more in gas money to get to trailheads than on a quilt. A good night's sleep in the backcountry versus a quilt that doesn't hang properly under the hammock, leaves you cold, fills your pack to the brim or just is sub par - well, you get to decide what's that worth. For my money a good quality quilt is worth the cost of entry.

I think the best compromise of bother worlds would be easy ways to convert the mass produced items. Then you get the benefit of volume manufacturing and possibly high clearance sales from hig volume retailers for a specialty item. Now is the time of year when it might be possible to snag a super clearance close out on a cold weather sleeping bag. That isn't going to happen with a cottage maker who builds to order. I am keeping my eyes open at the rei garage sales for a nearly new down sleeping bag with a busted zipper.
