Charles deam wilderness by Bloomington is a good place also in Illinois is a trail th at professor hammock did. I did too called the forest Glen preserve. 11 mile loop about 3 hrs south of Chicago. Two designated sites one with pit toilets.. a little rugged mid hike but only 3 miles in is first site with tables and such and I believe it's by a creek. Che k it o it out was my first trip a few years ago
It's not the boulders that throw us off balance, it's the pebbles beneath our feet
Nordhouse Dunes, it's an out and back route and it's easy. Lake MI is the water source. Beautiful dunes, lots of trees, dispersed camping.
Good luck,

It may be on the outside of your 3 hour range, but Wildcat Mountain State Park has Cart-in campsites and a decent trail with good vistas.
