anyone else have a wally world tarp?

I bought one a couple years ago and was wondering if it would be enough to keep me dry in a thunderstorm?

Should it keep you dry in a thunderstorm? As long as it is not damaged and as long as it is set up properly (covering the hammock) and staked to the ground. I am currently using a $10 blue tarp I found on Amazon. Kept me through the rain at least once. That being said, I will be upgrading my tarp eventually to a much nicer and lighter one. As long as you are mainly in the back yard or car camping (it is a pain backpacking my cheap tarp), you should be good for a while.

I used 16x20 big blue wally tarp. Actually my first group hang I had it. I used it many times including for tent camping. Many of our scout families carry them for when we know there will be rain. They are definitely water proof. All I will say is to make sure you use good line and not to overpower the tie outs. I actually used as many of the provided grommets as possible. I had 3 of them when I started. One got busted up good when I only used the 4 corners. The tarp was still good but I had to do the rock rap thing.

I use one of the blue backpacking tarps for either a ground cloth to sit on in camp, it also helps keep all my stuff out of the dirt. They are too small to use over a hammock even in the diamond shape. I sewed several tie-outs onto mine and use it as a lean-to when i'm in a bushcrafty kinda mood.

That would be too small for coverage. I was thinking you were talking more like an 8 by 10 tarp.

I actually stumbled across a thread the other day where someone had modified one of these into a hex tarp. It looked pretty cool and seemed like a neat DIY project to try.

i used an 8X10 for the first couple camps that i did. then i headed over to Woot and got the yukon outfitters tarp (which is available now actually) http://sport.woot.com/plus/outdoor-w...s?ref=cnt_wp_5

the 8X10 was fine for me but i didn't use it during heavy rain so i'm not sure HOW reliable it was. i use it now for ground cover during those car camping trips. i leave it at home during the backpacking trips though.

I've used these blue tarps several times when car camping and they work fine. I wouldn't really want to take one on a multi day backpacking trip due to weight and bulk.
