Official 2015 Minnesota Frozen Butt Hang Thread

It seems as though there are a few threads going on talking the 2015 Frozen Butt Hang MN, so I'm stepping up with creating the official thread.

Let's first start out by taking down a date. TZBrown said that in year's past it has typically been the third weekend in January, so that's what it will be!

January 15th-18th 2015 (We were one weekend behind the polar vortex. Maybe this year we'll get it!)

Last year, there was an awesome spread sheet going around for people to sign up for supplies. I don't know how to do one of those, so if someone with more computer experience can get that up, that would be great!

I'm no expert on setting this stuff up, but if someone's got to make some decisions, I can make a few. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know! I can spot a location and start with firewood collecting coming up in October and December. Maybe some of the veterans can recommend a location. Last year was great, I'm a bit worried about parking though.

Hoot and I are panning to attend. Been talking amongst ourselves about how to shore up our gear to handle the cold. Would love to go to the newbie hang in December but will be unable to attend. Anyone have any advice on insulation? Also does anyone have any good links on info?

in my experience people tend to be fine for the night while they are sleeping, but their clothing during the day seems to be lacking. Most over prepare for the night (understandably) but it's still really cold during the day, so having plenty of layers is a must. Make sure things are loose fitting and creating dead air space.... especially in your footwear. Also, make sure your outermost layer isn't synthetic as it will likely melt next to the fire. I'm a big fan of this: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/produ...gray?a=1024616 I have the 4XL and it's huge and wonderful for winter camping.

I completely agree with you hikingdad. Sit pads/foot pads are a must to keep yourself off of the snow. (I will be bringing a small chair.) Sitting by the fire is dandy, but the side not facing the fire gets pretty chilly. I stuffed my emergency blanket into my snowpants and up inside my jacket to reflect heat on my back. Worked like a charm and cut the wind from flying up my jacket. Hand and foot warmers were awesome to kill the chill every once in a while. The big ones last longer and "seasoning" your hammock with them at night was nice. I melted a pair of cheap socks by the fire, so extras will never hurt.

With the cold, mukluks are a great choice -- you'll see lots of them at the hang, loose fitting to allow for insulation without compression. For night, as TZBrown indicated in the other thread you should plan on at least 5 inches of combined loft from layered quilts or sleeping bags. You glean quite a bit of information from last year's thread: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...Butt-Hang-quot

You can see the crazy ultra cold set I made last year for testing at the Frozen Butt Hang. Theoretically good to about -70, had to vent during the hang. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...Cold-Top-Quilt

The advice on clothing is good, with the constant use of a warming fire, wool exterior clothing is highly recommended, and snowshoes are a must. The biggest recommendation is to first thoroughly test all of your gear in a safe location in conditions similar to what you expect to see at this hang. This is not the place to try gear for the first time, or to find out something isn't working out as planned.

I'm looking forward to this trip again this year.

mukluks are nice. I actually use a two boot system. I have a pair of nice keen winter boots that are great while you're moving around (i.e. snowshoeing) then when I'm at camp I switch out to a pair of Field and Stream boots that I picked up at Fleet Farm. The Field and Stream boots are really really large and are perfect for around camp. While at camp I use my hiking boots as a coozy to hold my water/drink and it helps it from freezing. This also prevents my camp boots that are my main warmth for my feet from freezing up over night... because I'm not hiking around in them getting them all sweaty.

Is there an approx location for this event....so I can see if I can make it maybe?

Probably a dumb question....but will a 4x4 be needed for this location and to get there?

I spoke with Hillbilly Deluxe and his wife, VineyGirl, about locations and I think it's still up in the air a bit. I don't think it should be required to have a 4x4 (i.e. it should be a plowed road).
