I use one of those moon-shaped travel pillows. I put it upside down under my head to read, then put it appropriately under/around my neck for sleep. It is filled with little tiny balls of something and is zero-compressible. However, it weighs next to nothing and keeps me from needing to put any insulation under my head or neck.

Interesting. I'm still new to my Roaming Gnome, but, like DuctTape, I find I don't really need one. I suppose I should try some of these ideas and see if I sleep any better.

I carry a north face sock hat whatever the season. It works as my freezer bag cooking cozy. If you stuff it with gloves, buffs, or extra clothes perfect size pillow for me. Turns out small thin and firm. Oh and you can still use it as a hat! One of the best pieces of multi use gear that I have.

I've always needed a pillow when camping until I started hanging full-time. My head just naturally sits where it needs to in my hammock.

I have an ultralight yellow net stuff sack tethered to my hammock ridgeline with string and a plastic mitten hook. Weighs nothing. When ready for bed I stuff my down sweater into it and have a nice sized down pillow. You'd think the net would be scratchy but it's not. I keep waiting for it to rip apart but it hasn't so far. A friend gave it to me years ago. Came from Harbor Freight in sets of three bags. My old pillow weighed 9 oz so the net sack has knocked off over a half pound from my pack. Plus less volume.

A good nights sleep and eating well are the two most important things to me on a trip. I have tried the cheep square blow ups, the moon shape travel type and stuffing clothes in stuff shacks. When I saw the Exped Air Pillow, I said drifter you are nuts if you spend $40 on a bag of air. But I LOVE IT!!! That slight curve is just enough, I only do about one full breath in it (you don't want it stiff).

I use a pillow all the time at home and ground camping. But for some reason, I don't use a pillow when I hammock. I brought one the first few times, but I guess it was the slight incline that make it not work well for me. I eventually ditched it completely with no regrets.

I use a Klymit Cush pillow http://www.klymit.com/index.php/cush-seat-pillow.html, and I like it because it's inflatable, super light (3oz), and when you blow it up, it can be used as a seat, or you can fold it over double or triple for sleep depending if you're a back or side sleeper and want it higher/lower. I made a homemade "pillow case" that contains it in its triple folded state so it doesn't move around. It's even got ear hole cutout for us side sleepers!
