Pillow or no pillow?

When I was a tent camper(ugh!), I needed a fairly large pillow to make my aging neck feel comfortable. I also HAD to sleep on my side.

Now that I have a couple of nights in my hammock, I find that all I need is the tiniest little camp pillow to do the job and I'm very comfortable on my back or slightly turned to the side. Yay!

Now, if I'm in my ENO, the sag allows me to go sans pillow. But, in the BB, I lay so flat that I need a little bit of support under my head.

I use a light weight fleece neck/travel pillow.
This particular one came as a liner with a separate core pillow .
A zipper permits the removal of the factory fill.
Still retains a bit of the original eucalyptus fragrance? Nice.....

I substituted a small micro fiber camp towel and sometimes stow a extra pair of clean SmartWool socks .
The Horseshoe shape is nice because it provides sides should I roll one way or the other during the night.
One additional advantage to this shape is that it stays on when I sit up. I often discover it still in place well after I have exited the Hammock in the morning.
Kinda funny .

I never felt like I had enough vertical height in my old Hennesy to comfortably use much of a pillow. The bug screen would get too close to my face .

In "Hotel BlackBird" I have room aplenty and can enjoy a bit of pillow luxury .

I use a stuff sack in the camp when I use anything at all. But I move around so much it never stays put. I don't want to carry a U-shaped jobber and I don't really want to hook up a tether. (I'd probably get it wrapped around my neck and strangle myself.)

For my home sleeper I found that a pillow is annoying but also quite redundant. I have sewn a strip of fabric onto the sides (double HAAB style) and I have discovered the strip of fabric is ideal for cradling my head in the diagonal position I use. I don't know if that would work for anyone else but it is ideal and very comfortable for me when I am on my side. On my back I don't need anything. The hammock supports me fine.

Wowo 3 pages in just a few hours. I have been working on this problem a bit myself. I have never slept good on rolled up clothes, just can't get comfortable. So yesterday I stoped back by OWF and picked up some 1.1 ripstop and some climasheild and today I am going to sew a pillow or two up. If these turn out well then I will probably make some out of down as well. I will try to post a few pics when they are done. I have a few hammock specific desighns in mind to try out that will make them a little diffrent and hopfully help out.

Well, if you like a eucalyptus scented pillow you'll just love a eucalyptus hammock!
Neat idea, but I just can't get past the laying on a wooden hammock part.

What works well for me is a down filled vest for a pillow. It fits into the multi use category because at nite when a pit stop is required I slip on my vest/pillow and .... well you can se the versality of it. One more use is to use it as a cussion when sitting in the hammock. Three for three is good usage.

room for two in a bed less than 4' wide? Best be cozy with the other person. Perhaps report to the intimacy in a hammock thread.

Hey Cannibal,
Now there's something you don't see everyday....

I found this pillow at a thrift store with the idea of knocking a pattern off from it. I really like the size and shape. The internal storage is a handy plus. (Dual purpose)

I think it was originally marketed a some sort of aroma therapy product from Bed, Bath and Beyond.
I am going to try making several from different materials. Terry cloth or silk comes to mind as a possible candidates to try. The fleece is very nice for cooler nights.

I fold a t-shirt several times until it is a 4"-6" strip, then I roll it up. I then place it only under my neck, like the Japanese use a pillow. It give your neck support without pushing your head up. I do shove a fleece shirt far up into the head end of my hammock to use for insulation.
