    Paracord 550 vs Speer No-Tangle

Alright, opening up another one of these threads of comparison! Forgive me if this exact one has been done before. I love to do my research on gear almost as much as buying and using the stuff. Thrill of the hunt, maybe?

Wondering about opinions of the Speer No Tangle vs Paracord. I know the Speer is approx $30 for 100', and if you see the link below, I can pick up some good(?) paracord for less than $10 here at an Army/Navy Store. I do like the bright orange of the Speer line. But not sure if that alone is worth $20! But also wondering about things like stretch, durability, etc.

    http://www.american-armynavy.com/CommercialParacord.htm

Looking forward to the opinions!! Thanks!

    Weight.
The Speer No-Tangle weighs almost nothing compared to the 550 cord. It's good stuff and is hands down the winner of that comparison for the ground tie-outs anyway IMO. I use heavier line on my ridge; probably close to the weight of the 550.
    Trust nobody!

    Speer No-Tangle

    Very easy to see.
Hard but not impossible to tangle.
    I love it.

    Speer Yes-Tangle :-)

The Speer line is really good stuff and, as mentioned above, very light and takes up very little room when you stuff your tarp up with it still attached. Plus, the Speer line won't absorb much water when it's wet, unlike the fabric sheath on the paracord which will, again, keep things light. Like Cannibal, I use a heavier line for my tarp ridge (Bluewater 3mm niteline utility cord from REI).

As an old former active duty Marine, I've used my fair share of 550 cord. I still love the stuff for the right application. But for applications with hammocking, and particularly tarp guylines, Speer No-Tangle wins hands down, no questions asked. It's significantly lighter, is easy to work with, has almost no stretch and as the name implies, much easier to get out of a jumble.

Paracord stretches way too much for a ridgeline. You will have problems getting a consistant pitch. I tried it because I had some laying around. Not worth the hassle. I ordered spectra a couple years ago and my DIY is still going strong. Worth a little more upfront.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

My experience exactly. Paracord sucks anywhere on a tarp, it stretches A LOT when it gets wet, so if you don't mind your tarp flapping like a bedsheet on a windy, rainy night, just use paracord. I use 7/64'ths Amsteel for tree ties and 1.75mm Lash-it for stake ties.

No doubt ! The Speer Spectra cord is pricey, but, it's the old addage you get what you pay for.

I got some cord before I bought the Speer cord from Z Packs, a guy that makes custom gear, called Z-line, and it's pretty good. It's stiffer then the Speer cord but you can't see it nearly as well.

I'll definitly buy more Speer cord again!

    Kelty Triptease line

I'm using this stuff now and it works pretty well. http://www.rei.com/product/617569 It seems to have less stretch than the braided nylon mason line and it doesn't tangle as easily either. Plus it looks cool at night when you shine your head lamp on it since it has the 3M reflective Scotchlite.
