you may want to consider alumnum arrow shafts,they work well.
alumnum arrows shafts extremely and strong and cheaper.one arrow shaft makes a pair for my claytor jungle.below is a pic of mine,i cut the to 14 inches long with a small tubing cutter.i only 2.99 for and arrow shaft at walmartneo

Carbon fiber would be plenty strong enough for such an application. The fun part would be finding the size that is big enough to handle the load, but stay small as possible. I guess with the BMB you would want to get CF rods the same diameter as the stock aluminum spreaders so that you could reuse the ends on the stock spreaders.
Somewhere in the gargantuan Bridge Hammock thread I found a source for carbon fiber puch rods that were made to be compressed from the ends. If I remember they were not to expensive.

I imagine that a carbon tube that has large enough diameter would serve. But flex is a problem if you were to try and join two shorter pieces (unless you'd be OK with carrying single piece full length spreaders around).
I would not try using carbon hiking poles...the cost of failure is too high!

Carbon fiber has great compression strength but very little lateral (flex) strength.
While I don't own a Bridge hammock, the design leads me to believe that the spreaders would have to take some lateral loads. Any properly sized carbon fiber tube would probably be too expensive (compared to aluminum)

Recycle some high modulus broken carbon fiber nordic ski poles. They are a disposal problem for most ski shops. Also available at the start of most mess start nordic races. If I remember correctly the JRB Bridge spreaders are ~180gm. High end carbon nordic poles are around 100gm/meter. By the time you add end caps there probably will not be much of a weight savings.
If you use hiking poles the best overall weight savings would be to somehow turn the poles into a spreader bar. Has anyone done so?
