Hi all,
I am working on my own underquilt and am in the process of buying some shockcord. But can anyone give me any clues as to how thick the shockcord on an average underquilt is? THere are so many options. From 2mm up to at least 9mm.

I just went through this and I'd go 1/8". I believe 3/32" will work, at least for secondary or end channels, but I'd rather just work with one size. On a side note, as I was trying to figure out my suspension on my DIY UQ, I pretty much chopped up my 1/8" to the point that I couldn't really use it for the primary suspension because I didn't have a single piece long enough left. I had some 1/4" shock cord on hand and used that for my primary - it looks ridiculously large, but I guess it's only hurting from a weight perspective. At some point, I'll replace it with 1/8". I used 1/8" for the secondary suspension and end channels, and it looks right.
I guess 1/8" is ~3mm?

1/8...about 3mm will work to suspend it and 3/32...about 2mm will work good for end/side channels and other spots you might need to cinch up.

Thanks guys! This forum and you folks rock! I will go with the 3 mm. If verything goes well, I will hav my UQ finished next week :-).
I bought a used Incubator that has 3/32" in the primary suspension. I'm pretty sure this was switched out by the previous owner, and is not stock-HG. It doesn't hold the UQ up high enough, and I'm about to switch it out for 1/8". So I'd caution you against 3/32" for the primary suspension.
Related question: what length of un-stretched shock cord should I use for the primary suspension? Is there a good rule of thumb?
Thanks!
ufdigga, I'm curious, too. For the 1/4" I'm currently using, I ran a loop with cord to spare and just tied a knot in it to shorten it until it "looked right". I'm guessing that when I switch to 1/8" it will hang a bit differently, perhaps require a different length. Do people use some type of adjustment on the primary suspension such as a cord lock, or tie it and forget it?

I just bought the 3mm or 1/8 shockcord with 6 cordstoppers. Simply put this is what I am going to be doing. I hope this helps someone.

Don’t know what kind you got but I replaced mine some time ago because it was too short for my long hammocks. I got some 3mm from a local marine shop but it was rubbish for this purpose. It could not hold the UQ up. Later a found this http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/E...ion::1552.html Its what I will go for if I have to replace the original some day.

I use 1/8" in the side channels and 3/32" in the end channels. That combo has worked well for me on all my under quilts.
For the side channels, I use 5' of shock cord in the middle and the remainder is 1.7mm Zing-it. Mine are all partial under quilts.

My Warbonnet Yeti uses 3/32 for its suspension, but then it is pretty light, 13 oz. Seams to hold it up well, but I would not use 3/32 for heavier quilts like the HG incubator or UGQ zeppelin.
