I used a ENO for years at summer camp without any type of bottom insulation. I didn't know better. Just used my summer weight sleeping bag. This was in the mountains of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Only one night in PA did I regret it.

I'm in NC also, and I camp a lot in the summer...alot!
I use my BB in the summer and I never, ever use bottom insulation in the summer. It doesn't get under 70 here in the summer, so anything under me would make me miserable during the night.
Thanks for the replies....follow-up question then. If I make my own, is it better to start with a cheap mummy bag or a cheap rectangle bag? Walmart has one of each for about $40.
I use a no sew Poncho Liner UQ http://theultimatehang.com/?s=pluq in the summer or I have at one I made from fleece material if the temps are going to be over 75F at night. So, yes I always use a UQ of some kind. I find that temps below 70F will make be pretty cold.
This^^ One of the things that led me to hammocks in the first place was the natural "A/C" effect. We camp at least once a year in late spring & early fall when the temps remain above 70 and its great to have a cool place to sleep. I have a 2QZQ UQP that I bought specifically to keep the breeze out when (not if...) it rains. It also keeps the mozzies at bay. Fantastic piece of kit and all you need in the South in the summer IMO.
It is interesting and instructional to compare the replies to the locations of the posts.
Around here it is unusual to stay above 70 at night. Sometimes does but often does not as we only run the AC when opening the windows is too hot. ;-) At 70 degrees some insulation is good. Especially good if not much else is worn.
YMMV

Free advice worth what you paid for it. ;-)
Just picked up a 40F Zeppelin UQ and 50F Flight Jacket TQ from UGQ. At what night temperatures might the combination be too hot?
I recently hung in Lake Wales State Forest, when the overnight lows were a bit below 60 deg. I hung the underquilt, but left it alongside the hammock. In the late middle of the night, I finally began to feel a chill underneath. It was a simple thing to pull the quilt under the hammock and restore cosy-ness
The warm sleepers pride themselves on needing nothing. I, myself, am a cold sleeper and think mild discomfort is highly over rated!!
