Last night I completed my first DIY project. I used 1.1oz ripstop and 5oz climashield. I wanted it to be convertible to a flat quilt for wrapping around myself in the evenings, so I did a convertible footbox using a drawstring and union tape. I've never used a sowing machine before, and my (incredibly patient and wonderful) mother in law ended up sewing the insulation for me after I managed to screw up a seam badly enough that we had to tear it out. That said, I did all the cutting, some of the sewing, and learned a TON in the process.
I'm really happy with how it came out. It's 1 lb 10-14 oz (as close as I can get on my bathroom scale), and compresses down to the size of a cantaloupe. I only carry a 40L pack, so volume is as much of a concern to me as weight. It fits me perfectly.
Thanks to the community for all the information I lurked out of you . I really appreciate all the wonderful resources that everyone has shared. I get to test it out this weekend at Devil's Lake in WI. I am PUMPED.
