Add another newbie to the pile. I'm located in NW PA, not too far from the lake shore. I was big in to hiking and camping in high school, did some big chunks of the AT, scouts, that sort of thing, and I'm coming back in to it.
My last real trek in to the woods for more than a night was almost 6 years ago during USAF Survival School. Now I've got 200 acres of nice woods out my back door, and I'm not doing anything but staring at it. Gotta rectify that post haste!
I wasn't a hammock fan until recently. I happened to lay in a cheap nylon camping hammock being made and sold by a husband and wife at a local mall before the holidays and I was pretty impressed. Some youtubing led me to Shug's always entertaining and very informative videos. I've got a herniated disc in my back, and some accompanying sciatica, so something besides a 1/2" thick mat on the dirt or a plank floor is a heck of an improvement. Walking, running, lifting, all that is no trouble. But I sleep on a hard or uneven surface one night, and I'm in agony for days. I'm really hoping a hammock can get me back in the woods in comfort.
I've been lurking the last few days and have found some fantastic info. Thanks for the great resource and I look forward to getting to know you all!
