Looks like you can find river access along the first section of either side of the trail. I want to try to find that spot where you guys were hanging over Labor Day weekend. Did you go to the right or left out of the parking lot? Or another way, did you hike in clockwise or counter-clockwise, assuming that John Rock is about 12 o'clock and the parking lot is roughly 6 (not technically right, I know).
"The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."
~Bilbo Baggins - LotR
When in the parking lot facing the forest go "Right" past the fence and through the gate. Then take the trail to the "Right" that is Cat Gap Trail. You will be following a chain link fence for a bit. The next trail change is on the "Left" called Butter Gap Trail that crosses a log bridge and takes an immediate "Right" at the end of the bridge. Keep hiking until you cross another bridge and that's when you'll know you're there. It opens up into a beautiful pine forest! Ask for the Cat Gap Loop map in the store.
