Hammock Noob from Florida Giving Thanks

I just wanted to take minute to thank this forum and all of its members. I have gained extensive insider knowledge from reading everyone's suggestions and ideas. All of you have saved me much pain in suffering and likely 3 nights of CBS. I am gearing up for a 4 day AT section hike for late November. This forum led me to Arrowhead KAQs for an Underquilt. The Arrowhead team delivered an excellent product faster than anticipated. Much appreciation also to Shug and his informative and entertaining you tube collection.

    Thank You

Awesome!!! Many of us would have been spared several nights of CBS and probably found hammocks sooner had we known about this forum.

Howdy and welcome from the South end of the state. I did an 8 day NOBO section hike in late July with my son and friends. I used a WBBB XLC and Superfly and the rest were all in ENO gear. It was a great trip. Be mindful of your water sources, a number of spots were pretty low in the summer so we had to camel up a few times. Invest in a good guide map and/or an app like Guthook's AT Hiker Guide. Here is a good site to check your weather: https://www.atweather.org/
Hope you have a great time.

Sorry, "camel up" means to carry more water than what you would typically carry. For example, I drink a lot of water so I carried 2-3L of water depending on planned mileage, elevation gain, and heat of the day. When there was a long stretch of no water, say 8-10+ miles, I would carry an extra 2L of water between water sources.

From Springer to Neel I do recall one stretch of no water in late July. I believe it was between Hawk Mtn Shelter and Justus Creek. Thankfully one of the Trail Angels (Ron Brown I believe) left gallon jugs of water in one of the parking areas near Sassafras. There was also an Army water tank (water buffalo) in either Cooper or Hightower Gap, I don't remember which. Anyway, the reason why it's there is because Army Rangers out of Camp Merrrill (Dahlonega) train regularly in that area. Don't be surprised if you happen to run in to a Ranger squad like we did or hear automatic gunfire in the distance. They train on about 290 acres adjacent to the AT somewhere between Hightower and Justus Creek.

Be sure to ask about the water situation over at WhiteBlaze.net before you head out. There are a few local Trail Angels who can provide an accurate update. One of the biggest elevation changes will be Blood Mountain which is South of Neel Gap. Make sure you have a decent set of hiking poles. One early 20's hiker we met had to leave the trail due to severe pain in both knees and shins.
