    i must be "eye" balling it challenged, but particularly on -un-even terrain, but i swear i am level or even foot end higher til i get in then all goes to hell more often than not.....

    Now I know some folks are against bringing electronics out into the backcountry, but I do seem to recall someone on here suggesting a phone app called leveler that's got a couple nifty options to check angles and such. If you've got your phone on you anyway, would be a useful download.

    If you have your hammock strung further towards one tree or the other, even if the hammock is level before you get in it, once you get in it won't be level anymore I believe.

    Something to consider.

    I remember as a kid, my sister had a baby doll that when you lay it on it's back. its eyes would close. My "level" works the same way - I lay down, my eyes close- it must be the right level.

    Very good point Tendertoe, I doubt many have thought about it. A good reason to get used to eyeballing one's setup. I think this simple detail would help with centering a tarp over a hammock as well.

    This. Honestly guys, all this level and 30 deg stuff is just rough guides...

    And beyond that... If you measure your ridge line out level, your probably going to find the foot end too low.
