How many prototypes does it take for you to come up with a usable new design?

Heres a question for you, when you come up with a new idea/design, how many tries, or prototypes does it usually take for you to end up with a final product you are happy with? Do you nail it the first time? Does it take 5 or 6 tries? On a related note, whats your sucess rate? How often do you end up scrapping the whole project?

The Dutch clip project was fun from the very beginning. After the initial piece was made, it didn't take too long to fine tune it to the end design. The testing process is what ultimately determined shape/design, weight, material used, etc. I think if an idea has real merit, you tend to keep at it until its finalized. That being said, when some projects have aspects that are out of your control, frustration can set in rather quickly. I think that's why I like some simpler projects...typically gets completed and leads to satisfaction.

My success rate is 100%... the Molly Mac Pack has not been scrapped yet!

It took 7 prototypes to get it right.

    quick answer:

    1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or .......

Depends on the project, my past experience in related projects, the level of difficulty for said project, who is advising me or not advising me, who is helping me or not helping me, on whether or not I have the requisite tools, on whether or not I have the requisite materials, on whether or not I can afford the tools, on whether or not I can afford the materials, on how much thought I put into the project before starting, on how much my wife thinks the project is essential (this is probably a very important factor ) and a lot more factors that I cannot think of to enumerate right now.

Do you care to specify a particular project?

That may narrow down the factors a lot.

Let's see... how many trys did it take to make a home sleeper I am happy with? 1.. First shot

How many hammocks did I make before I learned what I like in a hammock (before I decided to make a home sleepe)r... My daughter lost count. She's the only one who was counting.

So.. what's the project? The item you are working one now? Or does it include the items which will follow the one you are working on now?

    Interesting question.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

You mean projects can actually be finished? I spent 9 years in R&D / New product development for a medical imaging company- trust me, just keep adding rev numbers to the end :-)

I'm a measure 3 or 4 times, cut once kind of guy, so I rarely get above v2.

Prototypes are not products that you made incorrectly. They are products that show a deficiency in the design, something you would not have known about unless you implemented the design and put it to use.

Careful contemplation (virtual/imagined prototyping, as it were) can save resources and often bypass physical prototyping but it may take more time.

In my work I use several different types of prototypes to include:

Proof-of-Principle Prototype or proof of concept models.
These are little more then mockups to see if the idea has merit and should be considered for further study.

Form Study Prototypes tell us about the look and feel with regard size, shape and physical footprint of the final product.

Visual Prototyping tells us about the products aesthetics and can be used in photo shots and target market approval study.

And finally we build Functional Prototypes that we can test and evaluate .

We may do several different performance studies as well as accelerated life cycle testing to see how well it will hold up in the long run.

Once a prototype has been approved it may still undergo many revision and upgrades from these prototypes to a finished production item.
Additionally it is not uncommon for more revisions and upgrades to take place well after a product has had it's initial release.
This is the nature and purpose of prototyping.
