    Karo Box Top Quilt

I decided to make my own winter TQ. I remember when TeeDee debuted the Karo Box design in this thread and thought it looked like a great idea...so I made one.
The biggest differences between the Karo design and a typical quilt design is the Karo uses short (6" in my case) off setting baffles to make unconnected boxes Vs. long, continuous baffled chambers. This difference makes for many short sewing runs (36 for me) instead of 10-12 longer runs in the "normal" design. IMO, the layout/sewing portion of this project is more tedious and time consuming than the typical design, but the filling with down is much easier (since the baffles are not connected, you simply put all your down in at once and move it around evenly) Vs weighing and filling each individual baffle chamber.
    Anyhow, specs are 49" head/39" foot x 76" x 3" baffles. 15.1 oz 800+ fill down (20% overstuff) for a loft between 4" and 3.5". Weight is 25 oz
    Pics

I used masking tape to measure and support the baffles till sewn in

The bottom shell is wider to give extra material to tuck under you and keep the quilt in place...great idea TeeDee!
TeeDee's quilt had boxed edges to offer full loft to all edges...I was too lazy for that and just tapered mine (I lay on them anyway)

I'm estimating 0-10*F temp range (I will verify that this winter!)

This was a great learning project...I made a ton of mistakes...how else do you learn?
    Cheers!

Great job! Even seeing the pics, I can't understand how it all sews together.

Bet you can't wait to use it.

    Great looking quilt animalcontrol!

The best part has to be dumping those bags of down directly into the quilt...no weighing!

    Great set of pictures too!

I'll admit that it took me a while to get a sewing system when attaching the second shell to the baffles...

I've made other synthetic quilts, but this was my first down quilt attempt. A big reason for switching to down? life expectancy!

AC, that looks a lot better than my recent Karo/TeeDee quilt. Note to self: measure 6 times before you even look at the scissors... Mine is wonderfully functional, but I refuse to post any photos.

Yet another great thing about this design: when I made it, I only had the funds for 9 ounces of down, but wanted to eventually have about 10.5 in it to make it loft properly. When the additional bag of down came, all I had to do was seam rip a few stitches on the side of the finished quilt, stuff some down in, sew it back up, and work the new down into the thin spots. It's really easy to move the insulation when you want to, but it won't shift much at all on its own.

    Really nice work, Animal Control.

Yea, the ease of adding down might offset the extra work with the short baffles!

Good advice...I nearly cut the bottom shell 6" short..everything was marked up and I was getting ready to cut and thought..."Check your sizing again". Sure enough, 6" off. Whew...dodged that one!
Post your pics...no one will criticize and maybe you can help somebody not make the same mistakes!
