Cool New to the hang'in scene

    Hi to all,

This past weekend I got the chance to try out my friends HH. It sold me on the whole Hammock idea since I slept better than in my bed and didn't wake up sore. The only problem I had was getting comfortable around that bloody velcro strip for the bottom entry.

I would really like to get a hammock but first I have a couple of questions for you all.
First do any of you all have that problem and how do you get around it?
And because of that problem what type/style would you recommend that I go with?

    Thanks,
    Chiefstryker

Welcome aboard, Chief! Glad to have you with us in the hanging gang, there's always room for one more. I don't use the HH, my personal hammock for now is a modified ENO SingleNest. I'm planning on going to a DIY hammock soon, though. I don't have the bottom entry problem you do because my hammock doesn't have one, so I don't really know how to address it. There are plenty of people here who either use or have used the HH that can offer you a couple good words of advice on it. Best of luck and welcome to "The Cult"!

Welcome to the Hammock Hangin Mafia!!

As for the velcro entry slit. Once you get in it should snap closed all by itself. You didn't say which model of the HH you tried. But I am assuming it is an Asym model. Is so you just lay diagonaly in it and the slit should not be a problem. At least for me it isn't. Some more experienced hangers will chime in hear soon.

I agree with ShakeyLeggs, once you lay on the diagonal the slit should snap shut. I've got the same model and dont have any problems with it. However, if you don't like the bottom entry there are a couple of great top entry models out there. This thread will be full of suggestions by sunrise.

Welcome to hanging, CheifStryker. I've found the top loading hammocks are more comfortable because they lack the velcro strip on the bottom that pretty much limited me to being able to sleep on my back or halfway on my back / right side. If I turned to the left or all the way to the right, the velcro strip was very uncomfortable.

Risk test hammock is surprisingly comfortable for its simplicity. I used 12 ft of 60" wide cloth to make one and was able to get comfortable in a variety of positions.

I have mobility problems that limit my choices in hammocks to what I can get into and out of unassisted. Thus far, the new Jacks R Better prototype is the only hammock I have gotten out of totally unassisted and in the normal position. I can get out of a top loader that is hung lower than normal by walking my feet backward until I am pretty much standing. The only way I can get out of a HH is head first - not fun.
