I've always thought hikers were in no danger, and I've never felt like I was in any danger. No one hunts from the hiking trails.

In the Berkheads, folks from Raleigh go hiking with orange hats hanging on the back of their pack, never on their head. It really isn't necessary, when they never leave the trail.

I snuck up on a hunter once in the SE corner of the Berkheads. He was sitting on a deadfall, talking on his cell phone, and paying no attention to his six. He hung up and I said, "Hello!" from about 20 feet away. We talked for a while, and I went on my way. I learned a lot about that neck of the woods from him! Anyway, if he had looked in my direction before I spoke, he would have seen me, not a deer.

I went hiking in uwarrie during hunting season. I did not see any hunters too far from the parking lot areas. A few miles in seems pretty safe if that is their habit. There was a guy with pitbull off leash however that went into attack mode in front of us that was the highlight of violence tht weekend.

Sent you a PM. We'll have to head to Uwharrie soon then. I'd like to get back there and it's definitely close enough.

Will do. I probably won't get out until after Christmas. Schedule is really full. Uwharries sound good though?

I love the Uwharries. I'm only about 40 minutes from there. I go there all the time for dayhikes, camping, etc.

That's great. I've been there once and liked it a lot. I'd be up for exploring more down there. Maybe we could do a prior to Mt. Rogers gear tuning trip there in January...

I'm off the from Dec 24th to Jan 2nd. I have a new underquilt and tarp I need to try out. Haven't even been opened yet! I can't really hike more than 5 miles right now due to a recovering knee injury, but I know alot of places to hike, or car camp. I'm ready anytime.

Cool beans. We'll have to coordinate with cooldays (and anyone else?) and see when we can go. Looking forward to it. I've got a lot of gear to make and shake down before the end of Jan.
