Don't forget the fabric is more than a yard wide. I think if you use 62" wide by 9 ft long, you'll find the fabric is just under 3 oz/sq yd. Not as bad as 5+oz/sq yd. Fabrics are weighed by the square yard, not the yard.

I was thinking about this... And since I failed geometry...

So in a 2 yard wide, 3 yard long piece there are 6 square yards, right?

    64" x 114"(9.5') = 7296 sq.in.

    7296 / 1296(sq.in./sq.yd.) = 5.629 sq.yd.

    31.4 oz. / 5.629 = 5.578 oz./sq.yd.

Exactly. When you factor in the extra inch or two in your fabric's width and the extra length, it definitely should be less than 3.0 oz/sq yd.

What colors did you find when you went back?

    EDIT:
OOOPPPPS!!! I didn't see the "1 pound" in front of the "15.4 oz". My bad.

Just this dark brown, a light blue and not enough of a taupe to make a tarp.

They did have some of this....Which I grabbed 4 yards of and just put it up in the basement. Held me fine just larks headed to the fabric...It was in the $1.50 bin. There was more..

This was also in the $1.50 bin. Grabbed all 11.5 yards of it... There is "USMC" stamped in fine print every so often in the pattern.

These are much lighter than the microfiber. I think they are still poly though. The tan didnt stretch any while I was laying in it.

Opie - I found the same camo material at Hancock Fabrics. It had USMC printed on it, but it was the desert tan digital camo. The bolt it was on said 70% polyester/30% cotton. It weighed 2.01 oz./sq.yd. Fine for a hammock, though, I think. When I went to get some more they only had a half yard left.
