Wow! I hadn't checked in a while and didn't know the BlackCat site was gone. Great save in getting the copy. Somewhere on this dang computer are PDF files of both the KAQ and BlackCat instructions. Still, glad to know you got our backs.

Griz said that BlackBishop made three KAQs for him, one of which he sold to me.

Bishop did make them for a while. The one I had was from him that Dutch now owns was from him too. I think Ramblinrev was confused only about which websites were/are defunct.

Big props to everyone who helped rescue the plans for both (Gunn Parker, HC4U, etc).

Patrick did try to have a manufacturer of sleeping bags produce them. They made ONE prototype & were rejected. I never did find out what the "Problem" was from patrick's POV, but as I have that prototype, I have had the chance to compare to some Patrick and BB made: Mine is a bit thinner, & minor (to my eyes) production flaws / design "deviations". I do wish the Patomics were still in production, but stuff happens

Likely, a similar product could be made with a Ray Way quilt cut to the shape of a Patomic. With Alpine Upgrade a Ray Way would be about $85.00 plus shipping. Made per the Ray Way instrucions, once I followed them that is mine took about 4 hours to make. I suspect the KAQ / patomic would take about that length of time once you had worked out the pattern.

The Patomic shape is (was) designed for a HH & it's Asymetrical design, but it does work with a "regular" hammock. And mine has gotten ME comfortably down to 38 degrees without the assistance of a pad or my hammock sock.

I have one of Patrick's original KAQ's I plan to list tommorrow when I have a chance to measure and weigh it. I like it a lot, but I have a Nest now and a Warbonnet syn UQ so I really don't need it. That KAQ kept my quite cold natured daughter warm on a 30 degree windy night using my Rock Wren bag. She was getting CBS but it wasn't a show stopper. I think the KAQ design works best with the JRB suspension in my backyard testing.

Was that the KAQ that you had at Mt Rogers? If so, was it extended or widened for your Explorer or will the stock plans work for both? The Explorer is 10" longer than the Expedition. I am wondering if I might want to make mine a bit longer and wider.

I have no idea if the KAQ plans are supposed to work for both Explorer and Expedition... let's ask Grizzly Adams what HH hammocks he used with KAQs.

That's why I wanted to try it first. It seems to be a perfect fit for my Explorer.
