The next section of the Neches I want to do is going to be at least a weekend affair, since the only two access points are ~30-40mi apart. End at US-59. Hammock will be perfect for finding a spot to camp.
I've got some bikepacking on the mind in the Davey Crockett National Forest, also. There's a 50 mile trail system in there that would be perfect.
For those who don't want to canoe the Big Slough, there's a hiking trail that provides access, too.
Then there are multiple developed campgrounds, too.
I just find it surprising that with all the national forests around, the recreational opportunities aren't really advertised. Other places I've lived with NF access have had much more information available about what to do and where to go. I guess that's why there are strangely no local outfitters.
Welcome Nate! Always good to see another tree dweller and it's great to have the Texas Ewoks on the increase.
Texas Group Hang next week just a short hop down 59 to I-10. Couldn't be more than maybe 190 miles. We'll have several of us there with a range of set ups and the more the merrier. In fact be sure to bring your wife, we'll have others there too.
1. School is out
2. Much closer than Big Bend. (Then when you see how much fun hammock folks are, Big Bend won't seem so far. )
Graduate students (especially me, my advisor is a slave driver) don't get breaks when school is out.
Besides, next week is too early for me to make use of the hammock. I am recovering from acute myelogenous leukemia and I don't have all my strength back yet. I've been out of commission for 9 months and I've had to re-learn how to do everything, including walking, feeding myself, bathing, and all that. While my chemo is done and I have been given permission to start school again, I am still taking piles of medication and my immune system isn't fully recovered yet. I definitely don't have all my strength back yet.
I hope your recovery progresses well.
When you're able to get out a bit, let me know. I'll be glad to come down and show you several different hammocks and suspension systems.
I need to see some new country.
No problem. I expect to be getting out more by March or so. I have to do some serious gym time before then, however. I hope to spend a couple days during "spring break" at least camping and stuff.
