Upon further inspection it is nylon. I'm a Navy vet and was stationed at an airbase out in California where the Navy does all sorts of weapons test as well as parachute testing. One of the PR's (parachute riggers) gave me an old parachute they had laying around the shop. It was destined for dermo but I got it first.

When I do get it cut up and decide to hang I'll definitely post pics.

Oh yeah to answer Miguel's question. It's OD and white.

In college one of my roommates was ROTC, so I do know what OD is.
The first time I heard the term was when her boyfriend was trying to purchase some OD earrings for her and I asked what kind of earrings are those? They laughed.

If it's one of the old parachutes like we cut up in SERE, it's DWR nylon. It'll work fine for a hammock...I even had a student make one during camp week. The problem isn't strength, though - it's finding a length of material that doesn't have a seam in it. You're going to have pressure points somewhere in there.

Walmart material is $1/yd...you only need $3.50 worth.

Bingo, I got it out yesterday and I was determined to cut it up. After staring at it for the better part of a half hour, I realized the exact same thing. I have decided to leave it whole and take it with when I base camp. It makes a great sun shade when strung up just right.

Looks like Walmart for me. I need to get the instructio book out for my sewing machine though. I keep breaking needles.
