    New products and IX testing

Just posted 2 new items added to the Arrowhead Store today. The Dinner Bivy and the Super Dinner Bivy. They are two new options for Freezer Bag Cooking Cozies. The Dinner Bivy is made from 1.1 oz ripstop insulated with a layer if Insultex. The Super Dinner Bivy takes it a step further by adding a layer of 3 oz climashield and a sil outer shell.

In making these 2 new products I did some testing with a remote thermometer to gage how effective the IX an IX+Climashield were. I started with a bag of cooked refried beans (about 1.5 cups) in a name brand freezer bag. I heated them to 120F, taped mr thermometer sensor to the surface of the bag and recorded the surface temp every minute for 20 minutes. I repeated this for both the Dinner Bivy and the Super.

This is the graph of the bags as they cooled towards room temp of 73. Just out of curiosity I left the Super set up longer at 30 minutes it had only lost 2 more degrees and at an hour was still over 106. This helps to verify that a single layer of IX in combination with Climashield traps and holds heat exceptionally well, an efficiently maintains that warmth.

Both the Dinner Bivy and the Super Dinner Bivy are in the store now along with a few other new items.

Those look like some great insulated bags. I'm amazed at the performance of the Supper Dinner Bivy. Just out of curiosity, what was the ambient temperature when testing? Thanks Paul!

Both of the Dinner Bivy's are 8x9.5 finished size the Super weighs in at 1 oz-30 grams on my scale, the regular is about 20-22 grams.

How do you pack them? Do they roll up or compress. I've made a bubble wrap cozy envelope but I don't like the bulk. I wonder how they hold heat compared to the bubble wrap insulation?

I bet the Climashield compresses a lot better. I've thought of making an insulated food bag that could be hung at night and would function as a cozy as well. Somewhere I saw a description of a system for hanging food that used two bags of different sizes. The smaller one could be retrieved and rehung more easily. (Anybody have a link to those instructions?) The small bag might be the right size for a cozy. Paul, you could market the whole set: big bag, small bag/cozy, & throw line with bag + instructions. I keep my throw line in a very small bag (uses a rock for throwing).

I made a DIY bubble wrap cozy some time ago. It works great to slip in and protect a zip loc bag with a few tortillas in it. I just slip the cozy in my bladder pocket inside my pack next to my back and it keeps them all flat.

The supper will wad up to just smaller than a tennis ball, the regular is a fair bit smaller than that. I can pack it inside a 700 mill Ti pot with a small fuel canister bellow. I have not tested them against a Bubble wrap cozy but I think either would be a fair bit smaller.

For a food hang bag I think I would have to do a bit of a redesign to make it work and be sure it would hold up well. I will look into it and see what I can come up with. But that would add to the multi function quite well.

I will get some more pictures up of them in the next day or two and maybe a short video to show the size better as well.

Ohhh - the FreezerBag.com lady is gonna get ticked. LOL I made my own using on one side the material used for oven mitts. It has a reflective side and a insulating side. You can get it a JoAnns.
