If you are fortunate enough to have a JoAnns fabrics, they have 1/2 off offers all the time, get on their list, and, Insulbrite is real cheap.

IB is also found at your local WW fabrics department... both Joanne's and WW have it for about $7/yd.

It's basically a space blanket needle-punched inside two layers of polyester scrim.

It's warm for the weight, quieter than a space blanket (not completely silent), and pretty warm.

I slept outside last night with a 2'x2' piece under my butt, and used 2 yards of it two wrap my feet/legs (of course, it was only like 40 degrees last night) that and my 1/2 sock, lost-river UQ and I was plenty warm.

I figured out that 2 layers of this stuff under my legs fixes my cold feet problem with a 2/3rds UQ, and wrapping a small piece of this around my head is almost as good as a wool cap.

Just for fun, I'm working on a top quilt that'll be: lightweight fleece liner, IB around the legs (tall footbox), 1/2" batting, and nylon shell... it'll be about 2lbs, but that's lighter than the Sleeping bag I use as a TQ today by at least a pound...

I am just using mine as a pad / liner inside my sleeping bag, and so far I am impressed with the bottom warmth. No UQ needed, for me , like this...

Hobby Lobby has the 2 foot wide stuff, here for $2.99 a yard.

Walmart (some) have the wider stuff for @ 6 bucks a yard.....

Since this stuff has been around for awhile, and it doesn't seem to have gotten a lot of play, there must be a downside. What is it??

I'm glad you brought this material up, Randy. My wife just made an insulated lunch tote using insul-bright a week ago. I was looking at this stuff and wondered if anyone had tried to use it for bottom insulation.

The only downside I found in it was that the mylar middle layer is easily broken apart from itself. If you tug on each side of the insulation, you'll see how easily it breaks. I figured that where you broke the mylar, this would cause cold spots.

Glad to see people are getting positive results from it.

So far the only downside has been static discharge...

I finished/tested this TQ tonight: has a layer of cheap batting and insulbrite...

No personal experience but can postulate based on what people here generally look for.

-Not as light as down or high tech synth insulation?
    -Not as compressible?

I made an under pad out of the IB to augment my HH SS setup it. I did get to a lower temp with it (27F) (cold sleeper). But I found that it doesn't compress very much. It's kind of like fleece.

Quite right on both counts. I bought some & played with it a bit... great for hats, or whatever on day-hikes. I'd never want to carry all that bulk for any length of time, though.

that said, it IS neat stuff!
