I just cut about 13" off the bottom of my heavy ENO bug net and let it hang. So far so good!

I think so, yes. You'd need to be careful.

Yes, but I have wrapped them in a layer or two of tape to lessen their grip a bit.
    Just depends on the application.

If you covered them in fabric first, or got some smaller ones, it wouldn't be so bad. Also, they come apart much easier if you slide them apart rather than just trying to pull them apart.

The two I have now will hold together through the end of my index finger or thumb. That's actually more pull than I expected them to have.

Edit, had a better thought. I think they would be about right if you put them inside some tubular webbing and sewed one end closed, then sewed the other end to the net. I hate velcro, so I might use this approach instead for projects.

The KJ Magnetics site listed above sells rubber-coated magnets. That would help with the fabric wear.

I like the 'inside a scrap of webbing'- now that I have made whoopie slings, there is a lot of webbing going unused..hmmm...
I think you can get those magnets in decent sized lots on ebay also-even the tiny ones would be enough for 'holding closed' purposes.

I wouldn't go thinner than a 1/16, and I'd try to go for bigger than the diameter of a pencil eraser. You can get them from many places, and it's usually cheaper if you get a dozen or so at a time. Shipping should always be cheap because they aren't that big, and they generally go in a padded envelope.

    How about magnetic bag clasps:

They hold things pretty well and not real hard to pull apart.

    Magnet fasteners?

Velcro or gripclip the foot and head ends below the hammock close to the ends.

Those magnets can be readily found, 1/4" round and 1/16" thick would hold well, and aren't so strong that they'd tear fabric. All the good consumer-grade ones are chromed since the metals used are toxic.

If they're sewn into pockets (take a look at a vinyl shower curtain liner) it'd probably work well. The only downside is that the magnets would have to line up, and if dropped in the dirt they would collect iron and be tough to get clean...
