    What's the longest hang??

Noob question, I've read on hear that most people use trees that are 15-20' apart ideally. Can you hang farther if you have enough cord? Say 30 feet?
Does it become a stability issue at some point?

What's the best cord to hang from, Spectra? Dyneema? 1/4" diameter?

    Yeah, I'm that green!!

A thirty foot span would require you to be over a ditch or tie off with a step ladder. The suspension lines want to be at a 30* (or so) angle from horizontal. It can be done but would be quite cumbersome IMO
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I have hung pretty far apart ..... up to 25'.
You just need to hang your tree hugger up the tree as far as you can reach.
cord? .... I had spectra snap once. It was thin though.
    Webbing is real strong.
    Amsteel too.
You may have to hang .... egress .... tighten .... repeat a couple of times.

I think the reason people only hang about 15' apart is that you would have to climb the trees to get your straps to hang at a 30 degree angle to your hammock. That angle makes all the difference in comfort. If you pack a ladder then you could probably go for it.

If you pack a ladder for car camping, didn't mean to sound like a jerk.

There's cord, and then, there's cord.

You want something with nearly zero stretch, and a working load limit that gives plenty of reserve. I use 1/8" Amsteel, available from several vendors here on HF.

I usually use trees at least 21 feet apart.

If you want to go really long, you need a pole in between. That is the span where the hammock hangs is between the pole and one support; that distance is say ~20 feet. In my experiments, as long as the tie off on the treeswas higher than the pole, the system was be reasonably stable. I got that idea from someone, maybe Risk?

There may be an occasion were one of the only trees close enough is to small & flexible (maybe a Rhododendron), but there is a larger tree several more feet away from the small tree.
I have used the small tree as a support, similar to the pole support that was suggested, & tied the small tree to the big tree that was to far away or not in line w/ were I wanted my hammock to hang. Works fine.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
