I know most people discount these nets as suitable because of the large 17 oz weight, however, I Was wondering where this weight comes from. Can it be easily modified (no sewing) so that it didn't have as much weight, ie. take off clips and ridgeline cord and use structural ridgeline, cut off extra webbing on stuff sack. Could this bring down the weight considerably?

I have this bug net and I love it. It's on the heavy side but it is very well made and is very durable . You could save some weight buy cutting off the stuff sack witch I have done but more than that I think you would take away from the bug nets ease of use and durability for the minor weight savings.
I have 2,, On one , I cut the sack off of to keep it from dragging or hanging on the ground,,, some critters like to crawl up the sides at nite....
as far as weight,, I don't care,,,,, I think I added some since adding the web suspension straps to them.
