I contacted Jo Ann Corp Headquarters

I saw the rip-stop an Joann's recently and was surprised. It seems 2 years ago there was none. No one in the store had specs on the nylon. So I called Corp head quarters and harassed them for a few weeks. They finally contacted the buyer and got back to me.

    The Ripstop Nylon:
    non coated
    64 grams a square meter
converted to English this is 1.88 oz per sq yard

    The Sport Nylon:
    non coted
    93 grams a square meter
converted to English this is 2.74 oz per sq yard

I'm sure they can change suppliers at will... but these are the current specs.

Then just for fun I asked them for the denier... still waiting for that call back.

Thanks a lot for getting that info. I for one appreciate your harassment.

    Another thanks for the specs.
BTW it also illustrates the usefullness of math.
That is what I calculated the weight to be. Nice to be validated.

After making one with Joanne's fabric, and two with Scott's ripstop 1.1 and 1.5, I definitely don't mind paying the slight difference and go with Scott. Drastically different in feel, touch, and ease to sew.

My gathered-end hammock from the crinkily (not a word I know) ripstop from Joanne, is now kids play hammock.

I just got 4 yards from JoAnn's the other day for my first hammock.

If I wash it after I get it hemmed, will that take some of the stiffness out of the fabric?

It should... You might have to wash and dry (Low Heat or air fluff) a few times.

Cool. After one wash cycle, it's slightly easier to breathe through. I'll run it through one or two more times to see if it continues to improve.

    hello,

i am getting ready to make a second hammock. i was hoping someone from florida could tell me if joanns rip stop is suitable for florida climate and mosquitos. is it breathable for the heat and thick enough to be mosquito proof? or would i be better of with the sport nylon or any other material?

    thank you for any suggestions.

It should be breathable for the heat, but you will want at least 2 layers for it to be mosquito resistant. I've been eaten alive through heavier fabric than 1.9 ripstop.

Joann's "Sport" nylon is spec'd at 93 GPM which is about 2.7 oz per square yard (if I got the math close). It seems tough enough but I just started using it on a DIY pack system so can't swear to its durability. Cuts and sews well tho, so I'm happy with it so far.
