    Hammocks in Georgia campgrounds

I was camping last weekend with a few friends at Tate Branch near Tallulah Gorge in Georgia. While helping some of them string up a tarp, a local ranger came by and spoke to another friend. The ranger saw my tarp and said, "All tents need to to be on the pads!" My friend told him that it wasn't a tent, and that it was a hammock. "Oh, well, hammocks are OK. They don't need to be on the pads."

I love the versatility of hammocks. I sleep and wake up more comfortable, don't have to look for a smooth or level spot, and I don't have to be limited to specific areas in a campground. Being able to sleep in a Blackbird is just icing on the cake.

Yeah, I took my first DIY hammock for my first hammocking experience in Cohutta a few weeks ago, we hit all the unmaintained trails like Sugar Cove(actually this isn't even on the map anymore) and Panther Creek. It was great for those areas. The only nice tent sites are down on the jacks river or conasagua river trails.

Best of all, we hiked in at night, and busted out about 6-7 mi's before deciding to make camp at ~2:30am, which would have been a nightmare otherwise. Here's a pic:

    I'm officially hooked.

Not all of them are friendly to us though. Especially the coastal state parks.

Thats good to know since I have been thinking of camping over there this summer. I really am becoming more and more afraid that we may find ourselves with a lot more 'hammocks banned' campgrounds in the near future. May be I am worrying for nothing...

    state parks and campgrounds

All the bureaucratic BS associated with the state parks, and camp areas in general is why I simply avoid them like the plague. I understand that most of this is repercussion of abuse, but that doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Great thing about the NF outside of the recreation areas: A little bit more freedom.
