The more I think the setup through, the more happy I am with the concept.
I was just wandering through the garage thinking about my lack of suitable trees, when it hit me. I will probably use a longer support soon. (Thanks for the rough calc, on the spreader effect)
Probably sleep in it over the weekend.

Best part..... No bugs or rain while I'm testing designs.
Worst part... Not the most attractive setup, so likely have to hide it when company comes by..

I love the idea. I'm using Risk's stand in my garage right now and it takes up a lot of room. I'm going to try this without the holes.

Probably spend the evening on the porch hanging like a bat. I'll let you know if I fall victim to gravity or an urge to make another hammock.
Perhaps after the Saturday morning chores as well.
Let me know if anyone else gives it a shot, particularly with another material for the ridgeline.

Those 4x12+ sized beams in the pic will hold far more than a hammock. It's just a matter of getting a large enough eye screw and pre-drilling the holes...

3/8" lag eyes are good to 400lbs ea, a 1/2" lag eye at least 5 inches long set at an angle should do the trick. I don't recall what drill size to use, don't make it too big or it won't hold.

You want the rope to pull less than 45 degrees off of the length of the eye, or the eye won't be as strong.

If you REALLY want a strong eye, you can get forged shoulder eyes from Amazon.com for $12 apiece...

NJKranz: Have you seen some of the bugs in South Florida? Bugnet is just about right...

Spent most of the night in the hammock. Setup is solid, but a few observations.
1. My wood ridgeline is too short. After a little stretch and settle. There was too much banana. And although I can tighten it up a bit, the attachment points are still a little too close to produce the right lay.
So next move is to snag a slightly longer board.
2. Stable setup and quite easy to move and store. 2 hooks and I can stand it up in the garage for storage. If I were a manufacturer of steel/aluminum tubing, I would consider marketing this as an alternative hammock stand. Maybe arch the tubing up to give more room on the entry.

Overall, still quite happy with it.

Sorry to revamp a very old thread, but has anyone taken this DIY to another level? Such as a DIY one point hanging hammock tent? Something more portable than a long 2x4. Been looking at those tree tents; and seems we should be able to DIY something more cost effective with a one point hanging system, and then tie out a side or both to keep from twisting. Kind of a portaledge; but not........or a hanging (more comfortable) cot, but not

Seems a simple enough concept to build off of. If it's been done, share links please.
