Just a question, but have you seen a nacrabiner/shackle? It wouldn't add any weight - it's just made out of line. You could probably make one out of the line you are holding in your hand in the picture without adding anything, especially weight.

Have you tried putting the D ring through the loop and using the D ring as a "toggle"?

I'm surprised you haven't cut the D-ring off. You could tie to the webbing just as well. I vote nacrabiner and/or penberthy.
I think you're missing the point - a nacrabiner isn't new hardware. It's a fast, clever, easily removable replacement for a knot in your cord. There is no stick, no toggle.
I am wary to try the dring as a toggle, just doesn't look like it would hold up ina strong wind.
i thought a nacrabiner was some kind of hardware. Google search pulled upp nothing.
