Just toggle the D ring.
Have you tried putting the D ring through the loop and using the D ring as a "toggle"?

correction: my aarn featherlite freedom in large weighs 3lbs 5oz, i left some stakes in there when i weighed it last time.
I'm surprised you haven't cut the D-ring off. You could tie to the webbing just as well. I vote nacrabiner and/or penberthy.
I am wary to try the dring as a toggle, just doesn't look like it would hold up ina strong wind.
i thought a nacrabiner was some kind of hardware. Google search pulled upp nothing.
