When laid flat, my #4 Snakeskins' openings measure 4.5" across at the wide end, 1.5" at the narrow end, and are about 7' long each. That should match up nicely with Cranky Bear's measurements, just giving you a different perspective.

I just stowed my Speer Winter Tarp in the skins for the first time and am super glad I got them now! Luckily, I got them off eBay for only $12 or I would've ended up making my own.

I just made a set of snakeskins out of regular mosquito netting. The large end was made of 14" wide material tapering to the narrow end with 8.5" of material. I use 1/4" seam allowance.

This reulted in a 4.33" diameter at the large end and barely over 2.5" diameter at the small end. I have 8" of overlap length at the middle.

This was for a MacCat Ulta Spinn tarp. As you know, this is a big tarp, and the skins fit perfectly!

I just made some this weekend by eyeball. Mine started with a 4 inch wide piece of fabric before hemming. Guess that makes them something less than 2 inch diameter. I didn't taper mine at all. I was just killing time and material for something to do. But they work fine on my 60" wide DIY hammock.
